Henry Liddell's (Liddell Scott Lexicon) buddy priest Charles Dodgson was a genuine pervert. Liddell permitted Dodgson to take naughty pictures of his 7 year old duaghter Alice dressed as a prostitute. Mr Dodgson under the pen name Lewis Carroll wrote Alice in Wonderland. • Dodgson was not a priest. He attended Christ Church at Oxford and should have been ordained a priest as a condition of his residency. Apparently, Dean Liddell bent the rules for him and allowed him to remain a deacon. No one knows why; the best guess is that he had some legitimate doubts as to his suitability for the priesthood.
• While Dodgson's photography of young girls, sometimes nude, is considered shocking today, it was not considered inappropriate at the time, and there has never been a hint of sexual scandal involving him and his subjects.
• Dodgson's photographs of Alice Liddell include pictures of her in the costume of a street waif, which is not the same as a prostitute.
• Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, far from being the product of a "deranged mind," is a classic example of literary nonsense, a genre that was popular with both adults and children at that time. Dodgson, a mathematician, filled the book and its sequel with word play, in-jokes around logic and mathematics and Alice's school lessons, the Victorian equivalent of "nerd humour," and plots based on card and chess games. Martin Gardner's The Annotated Alice shows how saturated Alice was with this kind of intertext. This isn't the mark of a deranged mind, it's the mark of a playful and clever mind.
