Just for those interested, here's what granny thinks of the OT (from which all of the verses quoted above come from, by the way):
http://christiancounterpoint.yuku.com/topic/3134
"do you think the old testament is purely alogory> i do and i think it was a book of for instances made by our Father as a guide for us
children,.,,,,just as we got the grimms fairy tales to teach our youth,,when i was a young mom,,,
God is teaching us his children,,and in his eyes we are never grwon up just as our children are in a mommas eyes, "
Granny thinks the OT is purely allegory, like Grimm's Fairy Tales. Truly fascinating. (Insert your own Mother Goose joke here.)

granny wren wrote: so, um, 2 things: 1. are these OT passages anything more than Grimm's fairy tales to teach our youth? 2. how's your linking sequence any better than "Judas went and hanged himself ... go and do likewise ... that thou doest do quickly"? 3. how's your unitarian sweet-inside-of-my-heart revelation any better than our Aussie Matt's Pentecostal PCE1900 epiphanies?

77: Since you consider the OT purely allegory, I can't help but wonder why you bother with any of the NT. After all, if it was only a bunch of fairy tales that pointed to Christ.....
"Truly, good Christian reader, we never thought from the beginning, that we should need to make a new Translation, nor yet to make of a bad one of a good
one ... but to make a good one better, or out of many good ones, one principle good one, not justly to be expected against; that hath been our endeavor, that
our mark."

"TRUCE ?"
No need to shout, granny. I didn't know we were at war. What would such a truce entail? And for the record, until now I've never known of someone who considered themselves a genuine Christian who considered the OT to be "purely allegory". Some certainly see a few select passages as possibly allegorical (e.g. a fair number think the book of Job was perhaps allegorical, and some others think the seven days of creation are not specific time periods (neither 24-hour days, nor longer periods of time, but rather just an "allegory"), but I've never heard anyone claim the OT en masse is "purely allegory". Frankly, I don't understand how a Christian (or a Jew, or even a Muslim for that matter) could even say that. Bhuddists and athiests, sure. And no, I've NEVER thought the OT is allegory despite the fact that I am human. At one point I briefly considered that the book of Job may be an allegory (and then rejected that idea).

i see you do not truly want ot talk ot a woman
Gender is completely irrelevant on this board.
did not say i believe that it is alorgory
Yes you did. I even quoted your words directly. Do you deny your own comments???
and i had my computer on caps and did not notice i am sorry
No problem.
forgive me your magnesty
Requests for forgiveness that drip with sarcasm are generally considered rude and insincere. That comment is worse than accidentally leaving your caps-lock on.
i know it is the road map sent from Gods mouth to the ear of the prophets for all mankind
You do? Looks like an arbitrary made-up string of verses to me.
all you want to do is make fun
Quite the opposite, actually. I would enjoy a legitimate conversation for once, one that does not float off into doctrinal la-la land.

"surely knew i was talking of things that were shown in alogory to foretell the savior coming"
No, I surely didn't know that. Words have meaning: when someone says the OT is purely allegory and comparable to Grimm's Fairy Tales, I take that to mean they believe the OT is purely allegory and comparable to Grimm's Fairy Tales. I don't see such a statement as meaning there are things in the OT that foretell the coming of the Messiah.

77: what's with the Martian antennae, and the Edward Scissorhands prop ....?
That's easy: both are an allegory: the antennae (donated by Ray Walston) symbolize the reception of "new revelation" by the non- or anti-orthodox, and the scissorhands symbolize the slash and dash attacks made by non-orthodox posters.... (And some people thought Paul's use of Sinai as an allegory was the height of such examples) |
