I'm doing a bit of a study on angels, and came across this. I know that Jehovah's Witnesses believe Jesus is the Archangel Michael, but was unaware
that there are some unexpected supporters of this idea. Now I should point out that the two well-known and well-respected men below are not saying that Jesus
was a created angelic being (as the JWs do). Rather, they are saying that "Michael" is not an created angelic being but just another name for the
eternal Son of God Jesus Christ, head of the angels, but it still was very surprising to come across these:
Charles Spurgeon: "Let the Lord Jesus Christ be forever endeared to us, for through him we are made to sit in heavenly places far above principalities and powers. He it is whose camp is round about them that fear him; he is the true Michael whose foot is upon the dragon. All hail, Jesus! thou Angel of Jehovah's presence, to thee this family offers its morning vows." (Morning and Evening: Daily Readings, Morning October 3)
Matthew Henry: "Michael signifies, "Who is like God," and his name, with the title of "the great Prince," points out the Divine Saviour. Christ stood for the children of our people in their stead as a sacrifice, bore the curse for them, to bear it from them. He stands for them in pleading for them at the throne of grace. And after the destruction of antichrist, the Lord Jesus shall stand at the latter day upon the earth; and He shall appear for the complete redemption of all his people." (Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary, Commentary on Dan 12:1-4)
