Is that how you define local fellowships? That is I believe the biblical definition of a sect or a denomination. And why can't one be simply a Christian, without any necessary identification with a denominational construction? Or if one is within such, affiliated with such or in agreement with such, why can't this be considered altogether orthodox? Irrespective of modern failings in church discipline and of clerical holiness in various individual examples, all the major Protestant denominations (or at least their more "orthodox" divisions ) have orthodox confessions. The concept of "heresy" requires unorthodoxy. Why then consider all the individual groups within the Church to be "heresies"? Sects or divisions or segments, perhaps, but not heresies. For example, would you call an apartment a mansion? That would be perfectly logical in Latin, but it makes no sense in English. (Hence the KJVOs' misinterpretation of "in my father's house are many mansions" (Jn 14.2) - my own translation was "in the house of my father there are many residences".) Just because a word may have a particular meaning in Greek, the word does NOT NECESSARILY have the same meaning in English! And the point of translating the Bible is to come up with a rendering using the same exact meaning, not necessarily the same exact words! I agree we can use the word, "prerogative or heresy or sect", since they are direct synonyms to each other, but to change the meaning to reflect a law regarding who has the letters of authority allowing those to kill those whose oppose their opinions , depending on who has the biggest Army, that's another opinion. Simply defined, hermeneutics is the science of scripture interpretation. What effects our hermeneutics, however, is our paradigm. In fact, if we all had the same paradigm, same IQ, and spent the same amount of time in our Bible study, we would all draw roughly the same conclusions. Alas, God never made clones, people do that. It was the Jewish paradigm that kept the majority of them from entering the Anointed's kingdom. Jesus addressed it when he said, *"No man puts new wine in old wine skins."* Of course, it was Jesus that was considered the heretic in his time. Heresy is easy to define but I like the Encarta Encyclopedia definition as well as any. Heresy, any religious doctrine opposed to the dogma of a particular church, especially a doctrine held by a person professing faith in the teachings of that church. The term originally meant a belief that one arrived at by oneself (Greek hairesis, "choosing for oneself") and is used to denote sectarianism in the Acts of the Apostles and in the Epistles of St. Paul. In later Christian writings, the term is used in the opprobrious sense of a belief held in opposition to the teaching of the church. Most of the anti-heresy legislation was a direct result of the empowering of the Roman Catholic church. This actually started the trend toward persecution and prosecution in the Christian era and gave the name heresy a bad connotation. Of course, we all know it didn't begin with Christianity. It has always existed. It is simply going against the majority and main stream of thought within a particular view. Bible Maverick
