John Wesley, 'The man who shook two continents for Christ', 'The founder of the great Methodist religion,'
Anyone read his book Perseverance of the Saints? It's a whole book about how you can lose your salvation. Here's some quotes from the book:
"On this authority, I believe that a saint may fall away; that one who is holy or righteous in the judgment of God Himself may never-the-less so fall from God as to perish everlastingly. Those who so affectionately know Christ as by that knowledge to escape the pollutions of the world may yet fall back into these pollutions and perish everlasting. Those who are sanctified by the blood of the covenant may so fall from God as to perish everlastingly. A child of God that is a true believer, for he that believeth is born of God, while he continues a true believer cannot go to hell (John Wesley)."
"If a believer may make shipwreck of his faith, he is no longer a child of God and then he may go to hell and he certainly will if he continues in unbelief. If a believer may make shipwreck of the faith, then a man who believes now may be an unbeliever sometime hence, yay, very possibly tomorrow, but if so, he who is a child of God today may be a child of the devil tomorrow (John Wesley)."
That's kind of like your children, right? Today, they're your children. Tomorrow they might be your neighbor's children! The next day they might be someone totally different's children. The bible says,"Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is (I John 3:2)."
According to John Wesley, you'll never know if you're saved until you endure to the end and find out. Now is that what the bible teaches (I John 5:10-13, John 5:24)? This endure to the end doctrine is a false interpretation Matthew 24:13,"But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved." This verse in its context is referring to the tribulation. Reading the whole chapter makes this evident: "For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be. And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened (Matthew 24:22-23)." If the rapture does not occur in this tribulation, no flesh would be saved; that is what the bible is teaching here. This passage has nothing to do with spiritual salvation.
