Hello. My second post to this forum so far. I shall attempt at briefly defining an important biblical word. This is by no means exhaustive and not meant as such. In the Bible, especially in the NT epistles, we have the word FAITH in many verses. In many instances the word has the definite articel preceeding it. In order to avoid unnecessary errors and misconceptions it is most necessary that the word FAITH be accurately defined as to its exact meaning in the context considered. The word faith can mean many different things.
1. The apostolic body of doctrine the faith , contained in the NT scriptures
2. Secondly, we have the faith meaning the divine revelation of Gods righteousness Christ crucified, upon conversion
3. Thirdly, we have faith standing for the person of the Lord Christ Jesus, in His capacity as Saviour and Redeemer
4. Fourthly, we have the faith meaning the Gospel of Christ
5. Fifthly, we have faith meaning general trust in God as a property of the elect, wrought by the sanctifying Spirit
6. Sixthly, faith may stand for an act of faith at conversion, i.e. calling upon the name of Christ the Lord, which is how most professors interpret the word faith
7. The faith may also stand for the doctrine of Christ, His person and work especially as it relates to the salvation of elect sinners, not to be confused with the Gospel itself, but more expanded than it.
8. Faith may also refer to the divine principle of faith implanted by the Spirit at regeneration
9. Faith may also mean divine enablement to understand spiritual things
10. Faith may refer to the Gospel spiritually and deliveringly applied by the Spirit at conversion
Faith and the faith may have still more meanings, but these will suffice for now. Comments, critique and/or questions are welcome.
