I've seen various critics of James White, such as your Mormons and KJVOs, pound on him for getting at least one of his degrees via distance education (which used to be done by television, but these days it's also being done on websites).
I think that those who criticize guys like White over the distance education thing are behind the times, or are just not aware that there are now numerous (accredited) universities offering degrees online, even at the master's level.
My old job consisted mostly of making educational graphics for a university that has such a dist ed (web site) program in place.
However, knowing what I know about their dist ed sites (while working there, I, as well as the other staff in that department, was given access to all their dist ed material), I can't recommend anyone using that particular university's dist ed program
Some of the dist ed sites for this university I worked for were very skimpy in the content department, for starters.
I don't know if the professors for these courses had students do a lot of reading (from old fashioned, made of paper) books or what to make up for the lack of on-line material. If not, I don't see what students could possibly be learning from some of those courses.
Some of the content I saw for many of their on-line courses just looked sub-standard. I took 'brick and mortar' courses from that same university, and those classes were fine, content- quantity- as well as quality- wise, but their on-line courses... well that was a different story.
I recall telling one of my friends who used to work in the same dept. (she was a quality assurance person who was fired due to a budget crunch) on the phone after we each were no longer working there (I chose to quit last August) that knowing what I know about their dist ed program, *I* wouldn't take any on-line courses from them if I could help it.
She laughed hysterically, since she knew what I meant.
I'm sure that other universities that offer degrees through websites are of good quality, though. I'd think that mine was one of the exceptions.
