The earlier, and correct variant is "mortals of his good pleasure," that is, mortals that he favors, or is pleased with. This is the same phrase basically, as when a voice from heaven says of Jesus, "This is my beloved Son, in whom I have good pleasure." Interesting that the Douay Rheims selected the correct textual variant that early. Merry Christmas. We should pray for the Christian churches that were bombed in Jakarta, Indonesia, on Christmas eve. It announces peace and goodwill toward [b]men,[/b] not toward [b]all men without exception.[/b] Besides, it's like the greeting Jesus told His seventy to give: "... Whatever house you enter, first say, [b]'Peace to this house.'[/b] And if a son of peace is there, your peace will rest on it; if not, it will return to you" (Luke 10:4-6, NKJV). Such a greeting can be conditional, depending on the response. Maybe an Alexandrian copyist considered the Byzantine reading of Luke 2:14 "too difficult," and so reworded it, "Peace toward men of goodwill." :-) Yours in Christ, Frank

The text the KJV uses lacks one letter. The manuscripts with the letter are older than the manuscripts without. So, it is pretty hard for a copyist in the third century to change the text found in a manuscript from the 6th century becaise the reading is "too hard". What really happened is that a Byzantine copyist blinked when writing the word and missed that last letter. :-)
