Where does it say that these stars are holy? Where are they worshipped in "The Stars Also"? Is one star more powerful, holier than the others? Are there unlucky ones? The more appropriate view is that they were the comic book of the day. Pictures to tell a story. This is the thinking behind the icons in the Orthodox church. They began as pictures to teach the illiterate about the Bible and the story of Jesus - birth to resurrection. And of course the icon 'O Pantokrator - creator of all things. God did not become a star or place himself in the heavens.
But Amarillo, God did become one of the creatures, he became Jesus the man. Don't they speak of this as "O Magnum Mysterium"?
Amarillo said: i agree. while the Scriptures occasionally speak of "dark/mysterious sayings" or "riddles" (e.g Prov. 1:6), by and large God's Word is characterized as "light" and "instruction." Deut. 29:29 puts a stop to the kabbalistic hankering for secret meanings: it puts the focus squarely on obeying the lines themselves and not what's between the lines.
To see God's beauty in nature has been a large part of scripture.
Ps 150:1,6
1 Praise ye the LORD. Praise God in his sanctuary: praise him in the firmament of his power.
6 Let every thing that hath breath praise the LORD. Praise ye the LORD.
Ps 149:1-14
1 Praise ye the LORD. Praise ye the LORD from the heavens: praise him in the heights.
2 Praise ye him, all his angels: praise ye him, all his hosts.
3 Praise ye him, sun and moon: praise him, all ye stars of light.
4 Praise him, ye heavens of heavens, and ye waters that [be] above the heavens.
5 Let them praise the name of the LORD: for he commanded, and they were created.
6 He hath also stablished them for ever and ever: he hath made a decree which shall not pass.
7 Praise the LORD from the earth, ye dragons, and all deeps:
8 Fire, and hail; snow, and vapour; stormy wind fulfilling his word:
9 Mountains, and all hills; fruitful trees, and all cedars:
10 Beasts, and all cattle; creeping things, and flying fowl:
11 Kings of the earth, and all people; princes, and all judges of the earth:
12 Both young men, and maidens; old men, and children:
13 Let them praise the name of the LORD: for his name alone is excellent; his glory [is] above the earth and heaven.
14 He also exalteth the horn of his people, the praise of all his saints; [even] of the children of Israel, a people near unto him. Praise ye the LORD.
Euthymius said: Why anyone thinks they need to search beyond the plain and clear statements of Scripture, and look for "secret meanings" in both Scripture and nature, I have no idea. I for one certainly will not go that route, nor be much accepting of those who do.
forcyncia: Because they want to see God.
