I understand that the ASV is quite archaic and very literal. How well does it compare to the Hebrew and Greek texts? Is it a better version for "technical" study than the NASB, ESV, and RSV?

A book of parables and Mythology written by men for men and translated by men who were uin there time (SCRIBES) and who are in our time are called (JEWISH LAWERS.)

The word of God written by Jewish lawyers is a credebility problem for me.

Is it any wonder that these Jewish lawyers self anointed the Jewish people as God's chosen people When the old testament of the bible condemned the Jewish people as evil and sinfull people???

I'm noticing what seems to be a trend to me. In reading newer Bible versions like the HCSB and ESV I keep coming across awkward passages that are jarring. Most of the passages are pretty good, but then you run into a verse that really needs some work. With modern Bibles that have had several updates such as the NIV, NLT, NKJV, and NASB, you find much more polished Bible versions without jarring content and such awkward sentence structure. I wonder if either they really should run these...

Between the Updated NASB [NASB'95] and the NKJV which is your favorite?

I've always read that the NASB is the most literal translation, but; in examining both translations I think they are very close as far as being the most literal.

Over the past year I've used both quite a bit, and find them both to be excellent.

What are your opinions?

I really like the NLT second edition. The only major problem for me is with the way it reads in some verses regarding faith. I understand that faith is not the basis of our forgiveness,the finished work of Christ is,and becomes ours through faith.But the wording in some important verses such as those in Romans 4 and in Ephesians 2 dealing with justification and Grace {through/by}faith has the words "because of". I know that all of God is recieved through/by faith...it just seems...

Church or Denominational Bible Version Preferences

Other participants and I at a recent Bible study were surprised at how a difference in punctuation affects the meaning of Matthew 5:16.

"Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven" (NKJV). Here the punctuation makes it clear that the clause "glorify your Father in heaven" is part of a compound clause of purpose. In other words, our purpose for letting our light shine is for men to see...

Luke 2:22 and "her purification"

In the KJV (and TR) it says, "and when the days of HER purification according to the law of Moses were accomplished..." In the NASB and NIV, and some other MVs, it says "their purification."

According to Leviticus 12:1-8, the time of purification was indicated only for the woman who had born a child.

Does someone know the reason why the MV's say "their" instead of "her"?

It's as hard to put down as his epic work "The Five Books of Moses." Seems to be a few recent write-ups on the translation/commentary. Has anybody here started to read it? There is a certain freshness that Alter offers. He will go to great lengths to explain why and how, at times, the English versions fall short when translating from the Hebrew.
