Several weeks ago, I stumbled across an old classified ad for a old Bible. I contacted the seller to see if he still had it and for more info. He still had it, and he said he didn't know much about it but he found one page in it that said "1588". Excited but a bit skeptical, I arranged to see it, and it was a genuine 1589 edition Geneva! Did Tyndale translate Jehoshua's name as Joshua in his Pentateuch?

In Number's 13:16 in the KJB we read:

And Moses called Oshea the son of Nun Jehoshua.

In I Chronicles 7:27 a slight change occurs in the Hebrew and the KJB reads:

This is subjective and prone to strong debate, but I just wanted to ask the question, since different people have different preferences. I tend to prefer a literate, literal-but-not-to-a-fault style (like the RSV or the NRSV, but without the gender-mending tendencies of the latter, and without the thees and thous of the former). How about you people?

- I'm not gonna flame people for disagreeing with my preferences. I'm not a KJVO...anymore :P

Amplified Bible

I listen to a particular pastor on the internet who uses the Amplified alot. What are your opinions on that translation? I looked up some scripture and it seemed pretty solid, at a glance. I would assume it wouldn't be ideal at all for memorization due to all the inserts/bracketing, but would be ok for study. Is that right or wrong?

What do you think is the best general purpose Bible? Which version would 'fit' your average reader, and be comprehensible to most people as well as being accurate and reliable?

To be more specific, which Bible would you recommend to your teenage son or daughter, your co-worker, your neighbor?

Can these guys ever keep their word? What happened to: The NIV is now a fixed translation and will remain unchanged.

In the KJV vs. 42 mentions both broiled fish and a honeycomb. NASB, etc. don't have "and some honeycomb." Is this just because the honeycomb appears in the TR? Any theories on how it got in there? It doesn't appear to change doctrine either way and was just food offered to the Lord for Him to eat in His glorified body. Does the honey or honecomb have any significance?

Okay, here's my question. I was reading my Geneva and noticed in Isaiah 7:14 that the passage reads "the virgin will conceive" as opposed to "a virgin shall conceive."

Since my knowledge of Hebrew is quite limited to say the least, I was wondering, does the Hebrew structure of this passage lead the translation to use one article over the other, or is this simply a case of the Geneva...

Another study bible question here. Does anyone have opinions on the Dickson Study or Indexed Bibles? I know various editions were printed from the early 1920s to maybe the 1980s with variations in layout and name. I think they are out of print now.

Any thoughts on the content of the notes? Odd theology like the Dake or more straight forward stuff? Any editions better than others? it seems the 1950 version commands a good price when they come up on ebay while early versions often...
